Who is this for?
Homeowners in Lake Havasu City, Desert Hills, Parker, Golden Shores and Topock whose pool finish is worn, stained, rough or failing, and anyone planning a pool remodel with new tile, a new deck or a new interior. Backyard pools are everywhere in Havasu, and the desert climate wears their surfaces down faster than most.
How do I know my pool needs resurfacing?
- Rough plaster that scratches feet or snags swimsuits
- Stains or discoloration that don't come out with brushing or treatment
- Chalky, faded or blotchy surfaces
- Flaking, peeling or bare spots (delamination)
- Hollow-sounding areas when tapped
- Cracks in the finish, or the pool losing more water than usual
- Exposed aggregate on a pebble finish that's become sharp
Why are pool finishes hard to keep up in Lake Havasu?
- Extreme heat and sun. Lake Havasu City holds Arizona's record high, 128°F on June 29, 1994, and summer highs routinely reach 110°F. Heat speeds up chemical reactions in pool water and makes balance harder to hold.
- Evaporation. With only about 4 inches of rain a year, pools are topped off constantly. As water evaporates, the minerals stay behind, so calcium and dissolved solids build up over time.
- Mineral scale. That buildup shows up as white crust at the waterline and rough deposits on the finish.
- Water balance. Water that's out of balance either etches plaster (aggressive water) or deposits scale (scaling water). Both shorten finish life.
What are the finish options?
- White plaster (marcite). The classic, lowest-cost finish. Smooth, but the most prone to etching and staining.
- Colored or quartz plaster. Plaster blended with color or quartz aggregate for better durability and a deeper look.
- Pebble finishes. Small pebbles bound in cement and exposed on the surface. Generally the most durable cement-based option, with a textured feel.
- Polished pebble and glass bead finishes. Smoother versions of pebble finishes, at a higher price.
See pebble and quartz finishes for a side-by-side comparison.
Does a pool resurfacing contractor need a license in Arizona?
Yes. Contractors need a license from the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC), and the classification matters. Arizona's rules say the residential pool service and repair license (R-6) excludes complete replacement of plaster or pebble pool interiors. Look up any contractor at the ROC website before signing.
