Pool tile cleaning, calcium removal and tile replacement
That white crust at the waterline is calcium scale, and in Havasu it builds up fast. Here's how it's removed, and when tile should be replaced.
Waterline tile takes the brunt of evaporation. Every time water evaporates from the surface, the dissolved minerals stay behind, and many end up deposited right at the waterline as a white or gray crust. In Lake Havasu's heat and dry air, with frequent top-offs, it's one of the most common pool complaints.
How is calcium removed from pool tile?
- Bead blasting. A fine abrasive media, often glass beads or another soft media, is blasted at the tile to knock off scale. It's the most common professional method and usually done with the water lowered a few inches.
- Pumice stones and scrapers. Fine for light buildup on durable tile, but slow and easy to scratch softer tiles with.
- Chemical cleaners. Acid-based tile cleaners can loosen scale but must be used carefully to avoid damaging grout, tile and the finish below.
Ask the contractor what media they use and whether it's safe for your tile, especially glass or glazed decorative tile.
How do I keep scale from coming back?
- Test and keep calcium hardness, pH and alkalinity in range.
- Watch total dissolved solids. When they climb high, partial draining and refilling may be needed.
- Brush the tile line regularly.
- Use a pool cover when practical to cut evaporation.
- Ask about scale inhibitor products.
When should tile be replaced instead?
- Cracked, chipped or missing tiles
- Tiles that sound hollow or are falling off
- Grout that has eroded away
- Etched tile that stays dull after cleaning
- You're resurfacing and want a new look
Tile replacement is often done during resurfacing, since the pool is already drained. Coping, the cap around the pool edge, can also be replaced at the same time if it's cracked, loose or dated.
What affects the cost?
- Linear feet of tile and how heavy the buildup is.
- Tile type. Delicate tiles take more care.
- Replacement tile choice and coping material, if replacing.
- Whether the pool is drained for other work.
Prices come from the pool contractor after they've looked at the pool and talked through finish options. We don't quote prices ourselves, and a phone estimate is only a starting point.

Common questions
Is bead blasting safe for pool tile?
With the right media and an experienced operator, it's safe for most tile. Ask about your specific tile, especially glass or decorative glazes.
Why does calcium build up so fast in Havasu pools?
High evaporation leaves minerals behind every time you top off, so hardness and dissolved solids climb over time.
