Pebble and quartz pool finishes

If you're resurfacing anyway, it's the time to decide whether a more durable finish is worth it for your pool.

Most pools start with white plaster. When it's time to resurface, many Havasu homeowners upgrade to quartz or pebble, which generally hold up better against heat, mineral-heavy water and the chemical swings that come with constant top-offs.

What color should I choose?

Finish color sets the water color. Lighter finishes give bright turquoise water, while darker blues, grays and blacks give deeper blue to lagoon-like water. In strong desert sun, colors read brighter than on a sample board. Ask to see finished pools in the color you're considering, ideally in full sun and at different depths. Darker finishes may show some fading and mottling over time, which is normal for cement-based finishes.

Is pebble rough on feet?

Standard pebble finishes are textured, and some people find them rough on feet, especially kids who spend all day in the pool. Smaller pebbles and polished pebble finishes are smoother. If texture matters to you, ask to feel a sample or visit a finished pool.

Is a premium finish worth it?

It depends on how long you'll keep the house and how much the pool gets used. A finish that lasts longer means fewer drain-and-resurface cycles, less downtime and less water used refilling. If you're selling soon, a fresh plaster finish may be enough. If you're staying, the longer-lasting options often make more sense.

Does finish choice change maintenance?

All cement-based finishes need balanced water. Pebble and quartz tolerate minor chemistry swings better than plain plaster, but none of them are immune to scale or etching. Keeping calcium hardness, pH, alkalinity and stabilizer in range protects whatever finish you choose.

What affects the cost?

  • Product and aggregate. Polished pebble and glass bead cost the most.
  • Pool size and features.
  • Prep work on the existing surface.
  • Warranty length.

Prices come from the pool contractor after they've looked at the pool and talked through finish options. We don't quote prices ourselves, and a phone estimate is only a starting point.

Common questions

What's the most durable pool finish?

Among cement-based finishes, pebble finishes are generally considered the most durable, followed by quartz, then plaster.

Will a dark pool finish make the water warmer?

Darker finishes absorb more sunlight, which can warm the water slightly. In Havasu summers, that's rarely the deciding factor.
